A man whose car was found at Brancaster golf club set off
a search involving Hunstanton and Wells Coastguard teams,
Hunstanton RNLI hovercraft, police, and RAF helicopter
Rescue 128. The car was found on Sunday, but the
21-year-old man’s parents reported that he had been
missing since the previous Friday.
An air, sea and land search from Burnham Overy to Thornham, Titchwell and around Scolt Head found nothing. Police later recovered the man’s mobile phone from his car. Using contact details stored on the phone, they were able to locate the “casualty” in Norwich, safe and well.

Hunstanton Coastguard attended after a bait collector dug
up a 20 mm cannon shell. They recovered the shell to a
safe place after realising that it would be covered by
the tide by the time a Royal Navy bomb disposal team
arrived from Portsmouth. The explosives experts arrived
in the afternoon and took the shell away for disposal.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a porpoise stranded on the beach at Old Hunstanton.
Despite help from British Divers Marine Rescue, efforts
to re-float the large adult porpoise were unsuccessful;
the animal repeatedly swam back onto the sand. An RSPCA
vet attended and put the animal to sleep.
Following a report of a kite surfer in trouble,
Hunstanton Coastguard arrived at the water to find two
kite surfers who had lost their boards.
They directed Hunstanton RNLI hovercraft to one of the casualties, who refused help but was escorted back to shore. The second casualty was helped back to shore by a fellow kite surfer. Neither casualty needed medical attention.

MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a person in trouble in a dinghy. The Coastguard team
searched the promenade from the powerboat ramp to the
sailing club, and checked the clifftop car park, but
found nothing. The incident was believed to be a hoax.
During a regular weekly training session at Hunstanton
Coastguard, MRCC Yarmouth called to say that red flares
had been reported in the Wash and near Mablethorpe. From
Hunstanton clifftop, two team members observed a lot of
activity from both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters,
but no red flares. After 40 minutes they returned to
base, having told Yarmouth that any red lights were
probably aircraft beacons.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after an
elderly woman was injured in a fall at one of the beach
groynes. With a large number of spectators on the
promenade and beach, the Coastguard team provided crowd
control to allow the Air Ambulance to land on the beach.
They then helped to get the casualty onto a stretcher and
into the helicopter. With the tide coming in fast, they
finished up with wet feet.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a 15-m
vessel was reported overdue. The vessel, which was making
passage from Brighton to Edinburgh, had not been heard of
since Saturday morning. Coastguards checked the coastline
from King’s Lynn to Brancaster, observing several
fishing boats and a pilot vessel. The team stood down at
03:30. The vessel was later found near Whitby.
On a routine patrol, Hunstanton Coastguard was tasked to
Old Hunstanton where a kite surfer had been reported in
trouble. Arriving at the beach, they found the
32-year-old casualty being helped back to shore by two
bystanders. After confirming that he did not need medical
help, they resumed their patrol.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of red flares seen off Brancaster. At Holme and
Brancaster, Coastguards observed a red light above a
flashing white light. They believed this to be a
helicopter, though MRCC Yarmouth had been told that there
was no military activity at Wainfleet Range that night.
A kite surfing rig found floating in the water at Heacham
North Beach triggered a search by Hunstanton Coastguard
and lifeboat. While the lifeboat crew recovered the rig,
Coastguards spoke to members of the public. At Heacham
South Beach they learned that a person had been seen
there flying a kite and then losing it. They checked both
beaches carefully, and left confident that the owner of
the kite had not suffered any harm.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard to help a
paramedic crew with a female casualty in the water. By
the time the Coastguards arrived at the beach, the
casualty was out of the water and the team stood down.
The ability to fix position via mobile phone signals came
in useful when a 5-metre craft with five people on board
went missing in the Wash. Hunstanton lifeboat headed for
the position estimated by MRCC Yarmouth, about 7 km off
Snettisham, while the Coastguard team proceeded to
Snettisham bird reserve. Having located the casualty, the
lifeboat towed her to Sutton Bridge.
MRCC Yarmouth asked Hunstanton Coastguard to help an
ambulance crew with a injured windsurfer on the beach.
Arriving at the scene, Coastguards found that a member of
the public had already helped to lift the casualty into
the ambulance.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of two girls playing in shallow water nearly 2 km
offshore and as the tide was turning. Coastguards
directed the RNLI hovercraft towards the casualties and,
once they were safely back to shore, reminded them of the
danger of being overtaken by the incoming tide.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after police
asked for help in finding a missing 11-year-old boy. The
boy had been missing for some hours by this time, but was
found shortly afterwards.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of people cut off by the tide and stranded on a sandbank
off the powerboat ramp. By the time the team arrived on
scene, the casualties had been rescued by a member of the
public on a personal watercraft. Hunstanton RNLI
hovercraft checked that no-one else was stranded, while
Coastguards reminded the casualties about the dangers of
the tide.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of two 16-year-olds missing from Holme. Within 20 minutes
the team heard that the teenagers had been found at Holme
safe and well.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a six-year-old boy missing at Hunstanton. The boy was
found at the family caravan, safe and well.
MRCC Yarmouth called Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a windsurfer in trouble. The windsurfer reached shore
safely under her own power.
On a routine safety patrol, Hunstanton Coastguard was
called to help after a girl aged about eight was injured
in a fall. Coastguards cleared a landing site for the Air
Ambulance at the base of the cliffs. They helped transfer
the casualty to the helicopter, which took her to the
Queen Elizabeth hospital.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a boat of
the traditional coble type was reported missing from
Skegness. From the clifftop at Hunstanton they could see
the search in progress by Skegness lifeboat and inshore
lifeboat (ILB), and Skegness and Wrangle Coastguard
teams. Skegness ILB eventually found the vessel close to
Skegness beach.
Hunstanton Coastguard joined forces with Hunstanton RNLI
hovercraft and a police helicopter after a report of a
body in the water wearing a lifejacket. Arriving at the
beach, they spotted a member of the public picking up a
fluorescent helium balloon from the tide line. The person
who had made the initial report confirmed that it was
this that he had mistaken for a body.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard to help police
after a distressed man was reported to be running into
the sea. By the time they located the police, between
Hunstanton and Heacham, the man was under control. The
Coastguards unlocked the beach access gate to allow the
police vehicle to get back to Hunstanton.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a dinghy
capsized. Coastguards directed Hunstanton Lifeboat to the
spot, and the lifeboat crew towed the dinghy to safety.
The casualty had a minor arm injury that did not need
medical help.
An early morning pager call brought Hunstanton Coastguard
team members to the station, where they heard that a
missing person had now been found.
Hunstanton Coastguard attended when a 31-year-old woman
was injured after falling from a horse on the beach.
Coastguards used their collapsible stretcher to transfer
the casualty to the RNLI hovercraft, which took her to a
waiting ambulance at Hunstanton.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
that a kite surfer was in trouble. When the team arrived
they found that that no assistance was needed.
Hunstanton Coastguard guided Hunstanton Lifeboat to a
49-year-old windsurfer who got into difficulties nearly 2
km from shore. The casualty did not need medical help.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a person drifting in a dinghy. The call turned out to
be a hoax originating from Wisbech.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a person cut off by the tide. Team members discovered
a man fishing from a rock 300 metres north of the end of
the promenade; the Coastguard’s informant had
thought that he was waving for help when he was in fact
casting his line. In fading light, Coastguards
accompanied the “casualty” back to the
promenade.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a kayaker in trouble. Arriving at the scene, they
found that the casualty had made his own way safely back
to shore.
Returning from King’s Lynn (see previous incident),
Hunstanton Coastguard team members were asked to attend
their fourth incident of the day: a kite surfer reported
to be in trouble. Arriving on scene with a member of
Wells Coastguard, they found the kite surfer safely back
on shore.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a person on the edge of the Purfleet dock. Arriving at
the scene, they were asked by police to stand down.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a young
woman from Belarus waded out to sea and was caught by the
incoming tide. She was rescued by one of her companions,
and the attending lifeboat was not required.
Hunstanton Coastguard attended when two people were
reported to be stranded on a sandbank. The informant had
not been able to see that the “casualties”
had a personal watercraft, on which they returned safely
to shore. Hunstanton RNLI hovercraft attended but was not
required.
Clearing up after a very hot day at Sandringham Flower
Show, Hunstanton Coastguard received a call to attend a
woman who had collapsed on the beach. They used their
vehicle to carry the casualty off the beach, and left her
in the care of a paramedic at the Le Strange Arms.
MRCC Yarmouth asked Hunstanton Coastguard to investigate
a report of a red light seen in the Wash. Team members on
the clifftop watched the sea for 15 minutes but saw
nothing further, and the operation stood down.
Hunstanton and Wells Coastguard teams tried to
resuscitate a man who collapsed on the beach near the
golf club, and helped ambulance and paramedic crews when
they arrived at the scene. The ambulance took the
casualty to the Queen Elizabeth hospital, and Coastguards
followed with the man’s son in one of their
vehicles. Shortly afterwards they learned of the death of
the casualty, a 60-year-old man from Derby.
A personal watercraft (PWC) in trouble off Snettisham
Sailing Club triggered a callout for Hunstanton
Coastguard. The driver was safe, but the craft itself was
left stranded. Coastguards helped to recover it.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a
six-year-old child went missing from the clifftop car
park. Working with the police, they found the child under
the cliffs, safe and well.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of two children missing in an inflatable dinghy. The
children got themselves safely back to shore, though the
dinghy was lost.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a missing child. The child was found safe and well at
16:10.
MRCC Yarmouth asked Hunstanton Coastguard to investigate
a report of a dead seal. Team members located the seal
and buried it.
MRCC Yarmouth asked Hunstanton Coastguard to join a
search for a missing man believed to be in a distressed
state, whose mobile phone had been found on the beach by
a member of the public. The search also involved Wells
Coastguard, Hunstanton lifeboat and hovercraft, an RAF
rescue helicopter and the police. Hunstanton Coastguard
searched east of the lifeboat station, while the Wells
team searched to the west. At 20:15 Wells Coastguard
found the casualty by the beach huts.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a personal watercraft (PWC) in trouble. Arriving at
the beach they found the driver safely back on shore.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a personal watercraft (PWC) in trouble. On arriving at
the beach, the team found the driver safe on shore. The
lifeboat stood down and Coastguards helped recover the
craft to its trailer.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a
commercial vessel, the Katie Louise, was reported late.
The vessel could not be contacted by radio, and the
harbour to which it was returning was unknown.
Team members went to the vessel’s home port of Brancaster, while the Station Officer and Deputy Station Officer, who had been in Weybourne, worked with Wells Coastguard to search for the skipper’s car at Cley and Salthouse. The vessel eventually returned under her own power, having suffered damage to the propeller shaft.

The vessel eventually returned under her own power, having suffered damage to the propeller shaft.
Hunstanton Coastguard attended after a member of the
public reported a windsurfer in trouble near the sailing
club. The man made it safely back to shore after
abandoning his rig, which was spotted by Coastguards from
the cliff top and recovered by the RNLI tractor.
MRCC Yarmouth asked Hunstanton Coastguard to help with a
helicopter search after a 50-year-old woman went missing
from her home in Downham Market. The job of the
Coastguard team was to relay radio communications between
police and RAF helicopter Rescue 125. Police searchers
found the woman’s body later that day.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a kite
surfer suffered a suspected broken leg. Coastguards
stretchered the casualty off the beach to an ambulance,
which took him to the Queen Elizabeth hospital.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
that a vessel had sunk in the Wash. They arrived at
Snettisham to a distant view of a 12-metre Dutch barge
making passage from King’s Lynn to Boston in heavy
weather. Hunstanton lifeboat escorted the casualty to
Boston.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a person in trouble in the water. They discovered that
a middle-aged woman had fallen off a personal watercraft
(PWC) and had swum around a third of a mile back to
shore. The casualty, who was exhausted and had swallowed
water, was attended by an ambulance crew and by the Air
Ambulance, which was on public relations duty at
Hunstanton.
Coastguards carried the casualty from the beach to the helicopter’s landing site. After she had been checked by the Air Ambulance crew, they escorted the casualty and her husband back to their caravan.

MRCC Yarmouth tasked Hunstanton Coastguard to attend a
kite surfer reported to be in trouble at Old Hunstanton.
On arrival they found the casualty back on shore safe and
well.
While on a routine training patrol, Hunstanton Coastguard
was asked by MRCC Yarmouth to accompany Wells Coastguard
to Cley following a report of a body on the beach. On
arrival, the Coastguards found that the
“body” was a training dummy, which they
removed.
During a routine Sunday safety patrol, Hunstanton
Coastguard was tasked by MRCC Yarmouth to help Wells
Coastguard with a medical emergency at Lady Anne’s
Drive, Holkham. A person who had fallen from a horse had
a suspected neck injury and needed evacuation by Air
Ambulance. The Coastguards arranged a safe landing place
for the helicopter, which then took the casualty to
hospital.
A windsurfer who left his board at the edge of the sea
sparked a search when it was assumed that the board had
been washed up. While Hunstanton lifeboat searched the
sea, Hunstanton Coastguard searched the shore. A
door-to-door search of the bungalows revealed the
“casualty” safe and well.
Following yesterday’s discovery of two artillery
shells, Hunstanton Coastguard met an RAF bomb disposal
team at Holme beach. After waiting a few minutes for the
tide to recede, a controlled explosion was quickly
carried out and the team was able to return to base by
14:00.
Hunstanton Coastguard was asked to investigate a report
of unexploded shells on Holme Beach. They met the people
who had made the discovery, recorded the position of two
shells, informed MRCC Yarmouth and returned to base. An
RAF bomb disposal team was scheduled to return the
following day.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a woman
was reported to be cut off by the tide between Brancaster
and Titchwell. She had started out from Brancaster,
crossed the creek, found that she could not get back, and
did not realise that she could have left the beach at the
Titchwell boardwalk. Coastguards located the casualty and
Hunstanton RNLI hovercraft took her back to Brancaster.
MRCC Yarmouth called Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a red flare and a craft in difficulties off Heacham.
They observed Hunstanton Lifeboat giving the boat a tow,
and helped with the recovery. The well-equipped jet boat
had apparently sucked a rope into both of its water
intakes, stopping the engine.
MRCC Yarmouth paged Hunstanton Coastguard after a report
of a car stuck on Brancaster beach. They found the beach
road flooded, one vehicle stuck halfway along, and others
stranded at the car park. After assuring the people in
the car park that they were safe, they checked on the
occupants of the stuck car and arranged a recovery
vehicle. By 20:50 the road was passable to
four-wheel-drive vehicles and the recovery crew had
arrived, so the Coastguards returned to base.
